Visit Activities:
Admissions Interview:
No - Johns Hopkins does offer interviews but they are strictly information only interviews and thus have none to negligible bearing on admissions.
Information Session:
Yes - Incredible. The passionate speech detailed the many things I needed to know and it was good enough to make me decide to apply Early Decision. I left with a feeling that I could truly prosper there.
Campus Tour:
Yes - Nothing too out of the ordinary -- gave us a tour of the major buildings on campus, went inside classrooms -- like any other college tour I presume.
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
4 - Very Good
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
4 - Very Good
Appearance of Campus:
5 - Excellent
A bit biased but I love Georgian architecture! It's certainly not for everyone but it gives a very warm feeling to the campus. Red bricks look awesome with the white. Trees are abundant as wel
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
4 - Very Good
Outside is very well maintained and clean, but the laboratories could use a little cleaning up.
Dormitories:
4 - Very Good
Only got to see a video of them online but freshman dorms looks good. New dorms were finished to house upperclassmen so that is a plus.
Security/Safety:
4 - Very Good
Police officers everywhere...I think you're safe pretty much anywhere on campus.
Overall Campus Impression:
5 - Excellent
It really felt like home when I was leaving there. I guess you can call Johns Hopkins a near-perfect fit for me.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
3 - Good
Inner harbor and campus are nice, and so is the suburban area to one side of the campus, but the area between the inner harbor and the campus is very crowded and looked a little unsafe.
City/Town/Community:
3 - Good
Lots of places to eat, good college town.
Campus Visit Notes for Johns Hopkins University
Visit Description:
This was my 3rd college to visit out of Darthmouth, Brown, Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, and it definitely was my favorite. I didn't know too much about Johns Hopkins before I arrived for the visit -- all I knew was that it had a reputable med school. However, all of that would change during the visit.
I parked in the visitors parking lot (the area around the campus is a bit confusing and my family did have some trouble finding the parking lot) and followed the signs to the admissions building where the campus tour would start. I immediately noticed the sprawling forest...something very uncommon to see in an urban setting. It was nice -- I don't like the city atmosphere too much and I was really happy that Johns Hopkins was a haven from the city.
Campus tour was like all the other colleges' ones -- informative. Nothing too out of the ordinary. It of course gave me a chance to view the campus and I really enjoyed it. The Georgian architecture really made me feel at home with it's red bricks and white -- unlike the Gothic architecture at Duke (eww) and the unpleasant Brown campus (sorry but that campus was such a turn-off). The campus is also very small (140 acres) and in a sense...cozy. Hosting only 4400 undergrads, it was the perfect size for me.
The information session was beyond awesome. Good enough for me to decide then and there that this would be my early decision school. Seemed like the session talked about everything I represented and wanted from a school and I knew that this was the "fit" that I was looking for.
Then we decided to eat at a local seafood restaurant -- any one would have been fine. I believe they all serve fresh and tasty seafood that you could only find in Baltimore =]
