Campus Visit Notes for Johns Hopkins University

Visit Description:

We visited the Peabody Institute and not the main JHU campus. Peabody is isolated from the rest of JHU. While Peabody students may enroll in classes at other JHU schools and regular bus service exists between the two campuses, but we were told that most freshmen cannot take classes due to course requirements. Peabody students can complete their degree programs without taking any courses at other JHU schools and many do.

Peabody occupies a full city block and consists of a group of older buildings joined by halls and breezeways. There is a small courtyard in the middle but, as I remarked to my daughter, it appears to be possible for a student to arrive in September and never set foot outdoors until Thanksgiving break.

The complex contains a warren of halls and stairways that must take quite a while to memorize. Much of the interior appears old and worn...even industrial in some places.

While the artistic atmosphere appealed to my daughter, the physical campus felt confining and rather claustrophobic to her. In spite of Peabody's stellar reputation as one of the finest music schools in America, the physical plant was enough to put my daughter off from the idea of applying there.
