Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - Two admissions staffers spoke to (and then fielded questions from) students & parents in an auditorium. Fairly routine topics were covered, although it was informative.
Campus Tour:
Yes - Tour guide was a current student and an English major, which was helpful for my D. She was friendly and informative. We didn't get to go inside a residence hall.
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
3 - Good
It was summer, so there weren't many students around. The few students that we encountered seemed rather standoff-ish, although our tour guide was friendly.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
3 - Good
The admissions staff were courteous.
Appearance of Campus:
4 - Very Good
The campus seemed like it was laid out well and not too difficult to get around. In much of the campus, it was easy to forget that we were in the middle of Baltimore.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
5 - Excellent
All of the buildings that we entered were clean and appeared to be well maintained.
Dormitories:
The tour didn't include going inside residence halls and it was hard to judge just from the exterior.
Security/Safety:
3 - Good
Hard to say--Obviously, being on an urban campus, students would need to use common sense and caution, especially in going out in the evening.
Overall Campus Impression:
4 - Very Good
The campus seemed pleasant and well maintained. Also, having the cultural amenities of Baltimore nearby would be a plus, although safety would be an issue when venturing off-campus.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
2 - Fair
City/Town/Community:
3 - Good
Baltimore, IMO, is a mixed bag. The Inner Harbor area is quite nice. However, Baltimore definitely has its share of rough areas, including some that are rather close to JHU.
Campus Visit Notes for Johns Hopkins University
Visit Description:
Daughter is currently a HS junior, so we did the standard "info. session/campus tour" visit. She was particularly interested in JHU's "Writing Seminars" major and, from what she learned about the program, she was impressed. The biggest issue for her and us, regarding JHU, is going to be affordability.
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
We live close enough so that this visit was a day trip.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
D and I ate in one of the campus dining halls. The food was okay--not great, but not terrible, either.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
Parking was easy and convenient in the underground parking garage on campus.
