Visit Activities:
Admissions Interview:
No - No interviews offered
Information Session:
Yes - Excellent prentations by Prof Lester Su (Mechanical Engineering) and Tristan Davies (writing seminars). JHU picked compelling speakers for the program.
Campus Tour:
Yes - My older son is a rising junior at JHU so I was familiar with the campus but it was DS2's first tour. Unfortunately no dorms were open during the summer to see inside.
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
4 - Very Good
Tour guides were friendly. Few students around.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
4 - Very Good
Staff was helpful.
Appearance of Campus:
4 - Very Good
I like the look of the "brick" campus with the buildings looking alike. To me it could be a Holywood set for a generic college movie.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
Looked clean and well maintained.
Dormitories:
4 - Very Good
Not seen on tour but I amfamiliar with them. DS1 was in Wolman as a freshman and the rooms were certainly better than average (air conditioned, kitchenette etc.)
Security/Safety:
5 - Excellent
Security is omnipresent.
Overall Campus Impression:
4 - Very Good
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
4 - Very Good
The charles village area has lots good restaurants and conveniance stores.
City/Town/Community:
4 - Very Good
The inner Harbor is nice and Camden Yards is a great place to see a ballgame.
Campus Visit Notes for Johns Hopkins University
Visit Description:
Tour guide was just OK. Some buildings were locked so some labs couldn't be viewed. DS2 came away impressed with the breadth of different majors and course offerings at JHU. All the students emphasized that the "cutthroat" reputaion is a myth and in fact they tend to study together in groups and do group projects. We visited in June because we were in the area for other reasons.Obviously it is best to visit a college while it is in session.
Funniest moment was when the admissions officer for the Maryland area recounted how he knew of 3 students who scored a perfect 2400 on the SATs and still TOOK THE SATs AGAIN!
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
Inn at the Collonade (a doubletree hotel)is right across the street from the campus. Next to the hotel is One World Cafe which is an excellent vegetarian restaurant (a great place for breakfast).
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
Tambars on ST Paul has good Indian food and across from Barnes and Noble is an excellent inexpensive Japanese restaurant.
