Visit Activities:

Admissions Interview: Yes - College sent daughter her acceptance letter the day before our tour, which was nice. I had to cut the interview short, as we were heading to another campus an hour away for another tour.

Campus Tour: Yes - Our tour guide was friendly, but not the most efficient. After an hour, we still hadn't seen the 3 square block campus. The campus is beautiful. It reminded me of a small Miami University.

Campus:

Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
5 - Excellent
5 - Excellent
We met three students and both were very friendly. One let me see her room, as we weren't shown a room on our tour.

Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
5 - Excellent
5 - Excellent
We met three staff members. All were friendly and professional.

Appearance of Campus:
5 - Excellent
5 - Excellent
It doesn't get any better than this!

Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
5 - Excellent
5 - Excellent
Perfection! And I'm picky.

Dormitories:
4 - Very Good
4 - Very Good
The freshmen dorms were nice and seemed a little larger than most. The hallway and bathroom (yes, I looked) were very clean. There is one bad dorm for upperclassmen that looks like an old strip motel.

Security/Safety:
2 - Fair
2 - Fair
Kids seemed to feel safe, as they would leave their backpacks in a coat room just outside the cafeteria. Crime figures from LAST year do not bare that out.

Overall Campus Impression:
5 - Excellent
5 - Excellent
We really loved this campus. I'll consider to monitor the crime reports to see if last year was just an unusual year.

Off-Campus:

Area Immediately Around Campus:
2 - Fair
2 - Fair
There appears to be one abandoned building just to the west of the campus.

City/Town/Community:
2 - Fair
2 - Fair
We took a wrong turn and ended up east of the campus. Staring about 3 blocks and continuing on for another 6 blocks is not very nice.

Campus Visit Notes for Marietta College

Visit Description:

We were pleasantly surprised during our visit. Marietta has beautiful architecture and the campus is well laid out. Everyone seemed very friendly, yet professional. Our tour guide was very talkative, maybe too much so, as we were unable to finish the tour in the hour timeframe we had. I had to go back to the dorms, on my own, and ask a student to see her room. Daugher was embarassed and went back to the car. D is considering art. While the professor we met with was nice and informative, the art department did not look like anything special. We will make a second trip and meet with someone in education, the other interest D is considering. I'm concerned with last year's crime rates, but got an honest answer from the tour guide regarding 2 of 3 rapes on campus last year. Students come from 35 states and 13% are international. Of the 13%, 10% are from China. All students can have cars at school. There are some fraternity and sorority houses nearby, but I don't think membership is more than 20%.

Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:

The Hampton Inn, near the freeway, was excellent.

Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:

We ate at Applebee's, as the cafeteria was closed when we arrived, just after 7pm.
