Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - It was the girl's first time giving the Info Session and it was obvious she was very nervous. She gave it in a rather scrambled order and just wasn't very good, but as I said, it was her fi
Campus Tour:
Yes - He was good. He gave tons of interesting tidbits about things we passed by and explained the MIT experience very well. We also ran into one of his professors on the way, and he introduced us.
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
3 - Good
They kind of avoided us (they looked very busy), but I'm sure they wouldn't have been UNfriendly if we'd approached them. We noticed that they all looked stressed out, unlike the kids
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
4 - Very Good
Same as students in that they tended not to talk to us, but we actually did approach some of them and they were very nice when we talked to them.
Appearance of Campus:
4 - Very Good
The campus didn't exactly impress me, but it wasn't bad. But I was cold and sick and completely exhausted when I was taking the tour, so that may have affected my judgment.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
5 - Excellent
The only litter I saw outside was leaves, and in early November those are impossible to get rid of. The buildings, too, were really clean.
Dormitories:
Didn't get to see any inside, sadly.
Security/Safety:
5 - Excellent
Overall Campus Impression:
4 - Very Good
Like I said, the campus didn't impress me, but I attribute that to mood. The overall vibe was a good one.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
5 - Excellent
Cambridge is nice.
City/Town/Community:
5 - Excellent
Again... Cambridge is nice.
Campus Visit Notes for Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Visit Description:
My dad and I drove up from NJ (leaving at 4AM) to take a Harvard tour in the morning and an MIT one in the afternoon. It was early November, but it was a chilly day and I wasn't really dressed for it and I had a bad cold, so I was in a cranky mood, and as I said, it may have impacted my judgment. By the time I got to MIT in the afternoon I was really tired, too. The info session was pretty crowded. The student who gave it wasn't very good, but I guess she got all the usual stuff across- how many SAT 2's you need, all the stuff about MIT's schedule and such. Then they split us up into 4 groups. My tour guide was a Physics major from FL. He was very funny- not at all like the stereotypical MIT student (nerdy, etc.). He was friendly and witty and made sure to make it very clear to us that you CAN have a social life at MIT, and that people there are really interesting and don't sit in their dorm rooms and work all day. He also made it clear, though, that the work is tough and you need to figure out a shedule that's good for you.
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
I don't remember the name, but it was a chain hotel (Radisson, Ramada... one of those) about a block away from campus, on the same road as the new sponge-looking dorm.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
AMAZING Chinese restaurant across the street from the MIT museum.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
The MIT museum was pretty cool; they had holograms, and these neat Rube Goldberg type machines, and other cool exhibits.
