Visit to Massachusetts Institute of Technology in July 2008 by oasis ()
Visit Activities:
Information Session: Yes - The admissions staff was very helpful. A very typical information session though...nothing extremely special.
Campus Tour: Yes - The main tour took us through a lot of the campus facilities, including the major buildings and the dormitories. It gave a very thorough feel of MIT. A special bonus was that our guide also gave us a "mini-tour" of the hack locations whilst re
Massachusetts Institute of Technology Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - All the students that hosted me were hospitable and were not impatient at my queries about their institution.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - I met 2 college professors on my visit there. Although the exposures were brief, the professors were friendly and amiable.
Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - I love the Greco architecture present at the MIT campus. The lawns are kept neat and free from litter.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 3 - Good 3 - Good - The dorms (due to the age of the buildings) are not exactly "spotless", but the campus itself is well-maintained and not excessively dirty.
Dormitories: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - The dorms are comfortable and spacious in the grad suites.
Security/Safety: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - The MIT campus police is very diligent! The patrol cars are easily seen at night.
Overall Campus Impression: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - I really enjoy the MIT campus. The campus is big, but it is not disorganized and cluttered. The campus gives a sense of solidarity and not disarray. It is hard to get lost as signs are pretty well established throughout campus.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Charles River is beautiful and creates an immediate diversion from the main campus. The river is actually one of the things I enjoy the most about MIT.
City/Town/Community: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - The city of Cambridge is quaint, filled with bookshops, small restaurants, and cafes. Harvard University is within walking distance from MIT and the two campuses balance out each other.
Campus Visit Notes for Massachusetts Institute of Technology:
Visit Description: When we (my high school friend and I) were there we played many games of ultimate frisbee with other MIT students in the lawn right outside of the dome. At night, a couple of students took us on a night tour of the campus and we walked through the mazelike MIT corridors. They took us to some pretty interesting spots (the entrance to the dome, a couple of maintaince stairways used for hacks). I guess this isn't really a "college tour" that people could get with the university, but I think if you get familiar with MIT students some of them will take you on a trip like this!

The other two days we explored different parts of the campus and had a great time. We also used their crew equipment to get on the Charles River. The students were really friendly and happy to answer questions about the proud heritage of MIT.

Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments: I stayed at the undergrad and the grad dorms. They are old, but comfy!

Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments: There are many excellent restaurants within walking distance from the campus (I had forgotten the names to them), but dining at Cambridge is great.

Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.): The Boston Subway (the T) provides convenient transportation to pretty much whereever you need to go.
