Visit Activities:
Information Session:
No - We arrived about halfway through the session and decided to have coffee and snacks at the coffee bar located in their admissions office instead as we hadn't had lunch. An excellent decision.
Campus Tour:
Yes - The tour was great - lots of information about the school, the architecture and the famous MIT "hacks." Even my 12-year old S enjoyed himself.
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
5 - Excellent
The few we met were very friendly. Also ran into a girl from D's HS who is starting her freshman year there, so that was fun and surprising.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
5 - Excellent
They were actually students who were working the desk in admissions - and one of them ended up being our tour guide as well.
Appearance of Campus:
5 - Excellent
Totally different from the other schools we visited - but still excellent. Lots of cool architecture, a nice green, and lots of students walking around (freshman orientation, I think).
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
5 - Excellent
I've heard otherwise, but everything was nice and clean and in good repair as far as I could tell.
Dormitories:
didn't see any.
Security/Safety:
5 - Excellent
Seems excellent for an urban area. Saw campus police car driving by while we were visiting.
Overall Campus Impression:
4 - Very Good
D liked it a lot, but I wouldn't say she felt at home there. I think the campus was nicer than we expected, but she wasn't quite as comfortable there as she was at the other schools we visi
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
4 - Very Good
Cambridge - a nice urban area, lots going on. We didn't get to explore very much because we were running late.
City/Town/Community:
5 - Excellent
Cambridge/Boston - can't get much better than that for college - if you want an urban area.
Campus Visit Notes for Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Visit Description:
Unfortunately, we missed the info session because we drove down from NH that afternoon. We could have caught the last 20 minutes of it, but everyone was tired and hungry, so we got coffee and bagels at the coffee shop in the admissions building to revive us - it worked!
The tour was very informative - loads of info about the history of the school, the architecture, the majors/minors, ECs, and of course the "hacks." Our tour guide also mentioned that it's important at MIT for students to be well-rounded. Also, there were some very young kids on our tour - without older siblings! Not sure if they were looking for themselves, or what - but that seemed a little strange (I'm talking about kids ages 10-12).
The campus was actually much nicer than any of us had anticipated, which was a pleasant surprise.
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
Stayed at the Hyatt Place in Medford - about 15 minutes from campus.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
Just had a snack from the coffee shop - it was fine, nothing special.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
We got lucky and found a spot down the street from the admissions office - 2 hour metered parking on street. Not sure where else we could have parked, but I'm sure there are lots available somew
