Visit Activities:


Admissions Interview: Yes - Unusual in that daughter was sent a form in advance to complete listing, among other things, 2 items she would like to discuss during the interview.

Information Session: Yes - Better than most, especially due to the sense of humor of the presenter.

Campus Tour: Yes - Your typical campus tour.

Classroom Visit: No - It was summer.

The students on campus had taken a pledge not to speak English. But they smiled!

Midd, like many other colleges, has attractive old buildings. But what really stood out to me was how beautiful the new buildings were! Gorgeous. Noticed lots of fans in operation - no A/C.

The one we visited seemed pretty average.

The mother loved it. The daughter liked it.

Middlebury (the town) is adorable, and everything is within walking distance.

I sense a strong community spirit. I attended a bandshell performance on the green for the local animal shelter.

Campus Visit Notes for Middlebury College


Visit Description:

Daughter has been talking about Midd for years. I thought she would love it once she saw it in person, but the opposite was true.

While the campus is lovely, it is much larger than we anticipated, and buildings are very spread out. D didn't like that; maybe she was imagining a mile walk from dorm to class through a foot of snow. Also, the campus is pastoral - lots of grass, very few trees. D didn't like that either.

D knew that the college had a ski slope, and we drove past it. However, it is about a 20 minute drive away. D seemed disappointed. I'm not sure what she had been expecting; maybe to take a chair lift up to English Lit and ski down to Psych 101?

I loved the foreign language focus, including such touches as language tables in the dining room.

In the end, D liked the school but did not love it. Which is good, she won't have her heart broken if she is not accepted!

Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:

Loved the historic Middlebury Hotel, and the staff were wonderful.

Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:

There's a great restaurant with a deck overlooking the river. Sorry, can't remember the name.

Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):

Despite the small size, some of the intersections (there are multiple ones!) are hard to negotiate if you're on unfamiliar turf. It's not always clear where to stop, who has the right of wa
