Visit Activities:

Admissions Interview: Yes - They interviewed my daughter first for 10 minutes and then came out to get me. I was very unimpressed. First of all, a receptionist was wearing a sweatshirt from another Ohio university. The admission

Campus Tour: Yes - OMG! This campus is built on at least 4 hills. I was sweating at the end of tour from the workout. While beautiful, all the steps would get old in a hurry. Very strange layout, with clusters of bldgs.

Campus:

We only met the tour guide and she was nice.

Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:

They made us wait, even though we had an appointment. I mentioned the yawning and sweatshirt. They were friendly, but not professional or courteous.

Appearance of Campus:

Campus is made up of building clusters, so not a traditional cohesive campus. When you drive up, you pass one building, but only see 3 at the top of the hill. The others are behind or over the hill.

Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
1 - Poor
1 - Poor
Windows with condensation, holes in the floor, warped ceiling tiles, and out-dated sponge painting were some of the problems.

Dormitories:
2 - Fair

No closet doors so girls were using shower curtains. Rooms were smaller than most.

Security/Safety:

I've researched all the crime web sites and this appears to be a very safe school.

Overall Campus Impression:

The postcards we received were beautiful, but you really have to see this place to decide. It's probably a love it or hate it type school, and we hated it.

Off-Campus:

Area Immediately Around Campus:
3 - Good

The downtown area may be a 15 minute walk down a very steep hill.

City/Town/Community:

We ate lunch at the only coffee shop in town. The food was good, but the place wasn't real clean.

Campus Visit Notes for Muskingum University

Visit Description:

I really wanted to like this school. It's centrally located, looked nice on the postcards, and is known for it's learning disability programs. Part of the problem may be that, while it's a small campus, it feels really big. You can't see the most of the campus from any one point. There are always buildings on the other side of the hill. While crime isn't much of a worry, kids doing something stupid could be a worry. There are two bridges on campus. One is literally over a 50 foot canyon. The other is over the lake. These seem like potential hazards. Kids must have a meal plan all four years and when we got to the cafeteria, my daughter and I couldn't believe the horrible smell. Tour guide said, "Smells like food." That was a generous statement! Even though we'd requested to visit with a faculty member, no one was available until 40 minutes after our tour ended. We had seen enough at that point, and cancelled the meeting. I think they got the message.
