I'm a city guy, I loved NYU.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
5 - Excellent
Amazing restaurants, stores, you name it---center of the world.
City/Town/Community:
5 - Excellent
You can get to pretty much anywhere in NY via a train. If you're not from the city, it might take an adjustment period (to say the least). But once you figure it out--you'll be fine.
