Visit Activities:

Information Session: Yes - The Stern information session I went to was top notch. They thought of everything. Their presentation, especially the dean's opening remarks, pretty much bought my $60 application fee.

Campus Tour: Yes - We got to tour the different buildings while school was in session, so I definitely got a feel of what it's like to walk in a NYU student's shoes- very busy! You have to be on your toes at a

The Stern students who took our questions were very cordial, enthusiastic, and informative; however, we were given cold shoulders while passing crowds of students walking to class.

Very helpful and eager. You never felt the least awkward when asking questions.

Despite all you may have heard about the gritty urban life, NYU is located in a very ideal, picturesque, and expensive neighborhood. Everything is upscale, gorgeous and yet totally accessible.

Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:

It is immensely difficult to maintain just one Manhattan building (trust me, I've lived in a couple) yet the facilities were clean and well kept.

Dormitories:

Very very impressive. Each dorm room has its own bathroom, and all the rooms are bright and spacious. Like, I mean spacious. With beds and desks there was enough room to do a couple cartwheels.

Security/Safety:

Since NYU doesn't have a traditional campus, you're out in the open when you're on the street. But there was definitely the same safe feeling you'd have in an enclosed college camp

Overall Campus Impression:

Despite the urban setting, NYU maintains a cozy campus feel, especially with Washington Square Park.

Campus Visit Notes for New York University

Visit Description:

NYU's biggest selling point is undoubtedly the city itself. I didn't need a campus tour to tell me what I already knew from ten years of living in the city: in New York, you have the world at your fingertips. NYU in particular is right smack in the hustle of things.. Columbia, in comparison, is a good 30-minute train ride from pretty much everything. From NYU, Times Square is a 10-minute train ride uptown, Wall Street 10 minutes downtown, Union Square a 2 minute walk. You could walk to Taco Bell, a Bloomingdales, and several museums within 5 minutes. Walk 20 minutes down Broadway and you could have the greatest dumplings in Chinatown. Take a cab uptown and you could be watching the Killers in Central Park, or ice-skating on 42nd street. In the mornings, you can jog the Brooklyn bridge back and forth, grab a bagel at the corner deli, and take the 6 to that sweet internship. On any given night, you'll have the option of clubbing, attending a poetry slam, or having Chuck Palahniuk read you his latest book at Strand.

The city life is not for everyone, I assure you. There is a reason why I didn't opt to attend one of the best business schools in the country. Winters in New York are dreary and depressing; the bums that stalk street corners and piss on the posts are not that pleasant. Taking the wrong train could easily take you to the farther edges of the Bronx. Sometimes walking up Broadway in fierce 4-degree weather with the wind whipping and biting at your cheeks is completely unbearable. Living in New York demands a high cost of living, and the city streets are brimming with spending opportunities. Your classmates may look like they're wearing ripped, dirty underwear instead of clothes... but they really dropped $400 for those True Religions at Saks.

But NYU is unmatched in many respects. Despite hurricanes or giant snowstorms, it is still an impeccable campus. Its facilities are top-notch. Its medical hospital in particular is splendid- all the latest research, aside from its medical services, is being done there. Their professors are well-learned and easy to talk to. NYU is top-ranked in many fields, yes, just like a bunch of other pretentious schools, but it also opens career doors in every field. Business? There's Wall Street. Law? Every good law firm is on Park Ave. Fashion? NYC is ONLY the fashion capital of the world. Performing arts? Hey, it's a struggling field by convention, but New York is always brimming with the production of new plays and shows, especially downtown where the cultural arts scene is at.

I've always been pretty impressed by the scope of NYU's prestige. I've always thought its quirky, urban "campus" setting was to die for, I've always thought its students savvy and well-informed. The respect it has gained in recent years is matched by its desire to impress and more importantly, to inspire. As I saw in the Stern information session I attended, the students and faculty that entertained us were more than eager to tell us how great NYU was. Their enthusiasm was unbounded.

All in all, if you want to be where the action's at, NYU's your place.

Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):

Don't even THINK of driving. If you do drive, stock up on your quarters and read the street signs very very carefully.
