Visit to Northwestern University in August 2007 by jpark5 (Student, HS Class of 2009)
Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - I thought it was really helpful. Had funny stories about essays gone wrong. :) Campus Tour:
Yes - IT WAS THE HOTTEST DAY OF THE SUMMER. It was really hot outside. I thought 2 hours was a bit much, but I liked the tour. I liked our tour guide.
Northwestern University Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 4 - Very Good -
It was summer, so I didn't see too many students, but the tour guides (current students) were very nice.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 5 - Excellent -
I liked the staff that led the info session.
Appearance of Campus: 4 - Very Good -
I think it had the same feel as Stanford, except in a smaller setting.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 4 - Very Good -
It was clean and well kept. I just didn't like the buildings that much. Big, gray, and cement type buildings. Not too excited about the music building.
Dormitories: 3 - Good -
I got to see a suite style room and they said that they didn't have air-conditioning. :(
Security/Safety: 5 - Excellent -
Has little blue buttons everywhere.
Overall Campus Impression: 4 - Very Good -
I liked it a lot. It's very welcoming. More research university like than the liberal arts education they promote. Didn't get a strong sense of academia like some east coast schools.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 5 - Excellent -
I like the suburbs, since I have lived in a suburb all my life.
City/Town/Community: 5 - Excellent -
Close to chicago. That's a plus.

Visit Description:
I didn't get a very good impression from the website, but after the visit, it's definitely one of my top schools. I love it. There's something about the atmosphere and the people who go there seem to really love the school. But it wasn't as academic based as I would have liked. What I mean by that is like reading books all day long and having discussions about philosophy and etc. Northwestern seemed like it had more of a practical approach and encourages its students to go for internships, co-ops and have an early start in the job process.
Overall, I liked it a lot. I'll probably have to visit again, but I probably would be applying there ED.
