Visit to Northwestern University in July 2007 by terrapin7 (Student, HS Class of 2008)
Visit Activities:
Campus Tour:
Yes - Sort of did the "self-tour" but went a little off the beaten path. Classroom Visit:
Yes - Classroom was fit for apprxo 30 students, very basic. Lecture hall was much nicer, approx 100 people.
Northwestern University Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 3 - Good -
A lot of the students were courteous, but they seemed more wrapped up in their own lives. I felt they were very social and busy.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 5 - Excellent -
The guy in the admissions office was extremely helpful; put me on the mailing list, handpicked some brochures, asked me questions about dream schools, etc.
Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent -
The campus is very nice, especially for a big 10 school. Gothic architecture abound. The beach and lake michigan help, as well! even though the water is FREEZING.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 4 - Very Good -
Somewhat worn out, but nonetheless tidy. The dorms looked like they had character; the buildings looked like they had history.
Dormitories: 4 - Very Good -
Nice enough from the outside, but did not tour inside so I cannot judge.
Security/Safety: 5 - Excellent -
Visible campus police force, bluelight phones, etc. The town makes me feel safe...would not mind living off campus at all.
Overall Campus Impression: 4 - Very Good -
I think that if you like to play frisbee, laze around on the beach, or go for a bit of shopping, evanston is for you. the campus looked very nice for a big ten school; exceeded my expectations.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 5 - Excellent -
Evanston has a gorgeous pedestrian mall, sidewalk sales, grate ethnic food, etc. Looks lively and fun.
City/Town/Community: 4 - Very Good -
While Evanston was really neat, nearby Skokie was downright desolate. The north side of Chicago is considerably nicer than other parts, however.
Campus Visit Notes for Northwestern University:
Visit Description:
Just a few things:
1) Excited to see such a cool environment in the Midwest and at a Big 10 school.
2) The campus itself is beautiful; the facilities are nice, though perhaps not stellar.
3) The student body seemed active and busy; though, if you're looking for a more studious environment, then maybe nearby Uchicago would be a better fit.
