Visit to Northwestern University in August 2007 by DrumsAreForGirls (Student, HS Class of 2008)
Visit Activities:
Admissions Interview:
No - They said they don't do much in terms of interviews; most of the 'interviewing' they do is informational. Information Session:
Yes - Good session. They have a comprehensive powerpoint presentation and the presenters were witty and fun. Campus Tour:
Yes - Apart from it being a pretty humid uncomfortable day, this was an excellent tour. We walked around the entire campus and saw a lot of what there was to see. Classroom Visit:
Yes - We went into one of the lecture halls. It was pretty and prestigious looking. Kind of reminded me of a room from the UN or the Senate or something.
Northwestern University Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 5 - Excellent -
Our tour guide was very nice, and every fifth or so person that walked by was a friend of hers she knew from some club or something.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 4 - Very Good -
Didn't have very many encounters with the staff but I suppose that the ones I did were harmless. They appeared to be kind and approachable.
Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent -
This campus is immaculate. It's really everything you want in a college campus. And I mean everything. A bit more modern-looking than a lot of the other top-tier schools, and the view is beautifu
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 5 - Excellent -
Appeared to be completely clean to me. No complaints.
Dormitories: -
Didn't get to see any.
Security/Safety: 5 - Excellent -
There are these buttons on lampposts (apparently you can always see one no matter where you are) that you push in case of emergency and a policeman will be there within 60 seconds anywhere on campus.
Overall Campus Impression: -
Of all the campuses I've visited, Northwestern's is the biggest and most beautiful. There is a running track by the water on the edge of the school with a view of the Chicago skyline.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 4 - Very Good -
Cute suburban neighborhood with a bunch of shops and restaurants (Whole Foods, Urban Outfitters, etc.) just down the street. Then Chicago is apparently 20 min. away by bus, 40 by train.
City/Town/Community: 3 - Good -
I myself am not too keen on the Midwestern vibe (sorry, I'm from San Fran and it's just so different) but I can see it being a very nice environment for people who don't have that probl
Campus Visit Notes for Northwestern University:
Visit Description:
I was most impressed by their cafeteria. They have a bunch of little markets and built in restaurants in the cafe. It seemed like a really cool, social environment. I definitely recommend this tour, and obviously this school.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
As a student, you can get to and from Chicago mostly anytime for free.
