Visit to Northwestern University in July 2007 by super18blue (Student, HS Class of 2008)
Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - I thought it was boring. It was a slide show with information you can find on the website. Campus Tour:
Yes - Very good. The tour guide was nice and knew what she was talking about. Classroom Visit:
Yes - Not an actual class, but sat inside the room. It was big & nice with a cool look to it
Northwestern University Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 5 - Excellent -
All of the tour guides were really nice. Also, we saw people throughout the tour who would stop to talk and say good things about NU.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 4 - Very Good -
I didn't get good vibes from a few people, but other than that people were more or less friendly. Didn't see too many people though.
Appearance of Campus: 3 - Good -
It wasn't really my style. The architecture is kind of boring and it isn't really unified. There was lots of green space though which was nice.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 3 - Good -
Outside was beautiful. Everything was well manicured. There was a lot of construction though & the buildings were really musty from the summer
Dormitories: 4 - Very Good -
We went into a "suite" & it was cool, but the rooms were kind of small. There was two common rooms & it was nice.
Security/Safety: 4 - Very Good -
Blue phones, campus escort service, police. I saw a lot of cops when I was walking around too. Parking is a problem & there was a lot of towing.....
Overall Campus Impression: 3 - Good -
It was nice, but not AMAZING. We didn't really walk along lake Michigan but the part that I saw was my favorite part of the campus
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 3 - Good -
There is nice shops around but it's kinda...blah...nothing special
City/Town/Community: -
Being from a southern suburb of Chicago, Evanston/Skokie was nice but not as nice as I expected. It had a college town vibe but still very...not?
Campus Visit Notes for Northwestern University:
Visit Description:
Okay so I went to Northwestern off a whim since I live in Chicago. It was nice, but not as nice as I expected. It's awesome that it's right off Lake Michigan, and that floored me at first. But as the tour went on, I became less interested. There are some cool things (the Library, lots of green space), but other things less attractive. Not all of the dorms are air conditioning, the campus isn't well defined (which isn't really a problem, Evanston caters to the University). The street we drove down to get to the office was filled with closed down shops and it wasn't that impressive. We also didn't get free parking!!! (Lame, I know).
Okay...so Northwestern was cool....but just not my taste. I did like it more than UMichigan though, but less than Emory.
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
Didn't stay anywhere
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
We didn't eat here, and I don't even know if they have one in Evanston, but I would strongly recommend Potbelly for people who have never been....yum
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
We drove. We live ~1 hour away and it took us 2 hours...love Chicago traffic.
