Visit to Northwestern University in April 2007 by ridewitbd24 (Student, HS Class of 2007)
Visit Activities:
Admissions Interview:
Yes - best interview by far. his name was Cosmo! so laid-back. he was also an econ major and worked at goldman sachs but now is going back to grad school. this was the best interview because it wasnt Q& Information Session:
Yes - went to Preview NU, which is just a bunch of sessions. so informative and some were really specific to what I wanted. great job all around. Campus Tour:
Yes - About 30 minutes long. I visited on a sunny day so campus looked amazing. Tour seemed a little compressed and would of liked to see more of area near north campus dorms but overall it was good. Classroom Visit:
No - Dont understand the value of doing this.
Northwestern University Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 5 - Excellent -
Everywhere I went, people were great and everyone wanted to help. I kept getting called "prospie" but everyone wanted me to have a good time and went out of their way to ensure I did.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 5 - Excellent -
All the info sessions and tour were great and all very responsive to questions and honest.
Appearance of Campus: 4 - Very Good -
Great campus location. Buildings are great but not awe-inspiring. Very well-kept and fantastic lakefill, beaches and campus.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 4 - Very Good -
Some of the older dorms were not as clean b/c they are so big but everywhere else was very clean and the campus itself was well-kept everywhere. all the litter I saw were a couple flyers.
Dormitories: 3 - Good -
Allison, Willard and Elder all looked really nice but Bobb Hall is the biggest party dorm but least maintained. room size good at some places, smaller in other places (Bobb).
Security/Safety: 5 - Excellent -
Even though I visited on the day of VT massacre (I know..crazy), i felt really safe the whole day and never felt any threats. the location gives one a sense of security.
Overall Campus Impression: 5 - Excellent -
I really enjoyed my visit and that is why I am going to NU in the fall. I was amazed at how balanced the campus was and nothing was really lacking. I urge everyone to visit.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 4 - Very Good -
Evanston is a great place to live. My host gave me a tour in his car and downtown had a lot to offer a college student. i wouldnt say it had everything, but chicago is close enough so not a big deal.
City/Town/Community: 4 - Very Good -
again Evanston is great.
Campus Visit Notes for Northwestern University:
Visit Description:
I visited after getting accepted, during their admitted days (Preview NU). I had a great time and this was my best visit by far. Maybe b/c I got to stay overnight but I got a great idea of what to expect if I came in the fall. My other college visits were fun as well but this visit was far more in-depth in every aspect. From meeting a ton of current and prospective students to a great night with all of them, the only aspect I wish I saw was maybe a football or basketball game. I highly recommend visiting in fall or late spring b/c i would hate for the weather to be a detriment. NU offers so much for every student and I still cant believe I am going there for the next four years.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
great restaurants everywhere. Koi was great. evanston is known for its fantastic options in regards to food.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
Parking stinks. no doubt about it. parking is free if you can find it (what my host said) and he had a car but told me it wasnt a necessity at all. evanston is a nice place esp. downtown.
