Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - The information was a very informative power point during which we discovered the history of Rice and were able to ask questions. Although, most of it was factual and not insightful.
Campus Tour:
Yes - The campus tour lasted probably over an hour, we received water and were lead around campus. It was a little hard to hear because of construction on campus.
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
5 - Excellent
Everyone was really friendly and welcoming.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
5 - Excellent
The admissions officer really made you feel comfortable and encouraged us to ask questions.
Appearance of Campus:
5 - Excellent
The campus was absolutely gorgeous, breathtaking and architecturally pleasing. I did not expect the campus to be that beautiful, and I really loved it.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
5 - Excellent
The landscaping seemed perfect, I saw no trash. It was just wonderful.
Dormitories:
4 - Very Good
The same architecture that blesses the schools, define the residential colleges. They students are very attached to their colleges, which they are assigned and guaranteed to live in for 3 years.
Security/Safety:
5 - Excellent
The campus "security" force is a police department that can arrive on site in 90 seconds. There is a very low crime rate, one of the lowest in private schools in Texas, or the nation.
Overall Campus Impression:
5 - Excellent
It was wonderful. Trees covered some of the walkways. The buildings had beautiful façades and arches. Squirrels ran around on the front lawn, St. Augustine grass perfectly manicured.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
4 - Very Good
There is a lovely residential area right behind and around rice. An art museum is in the near vicinity and the medical center is across the street. It is a well kept area with much construction.
City/Town/Community:
5 - Excellent
There is a trolley system in Houston. The Rice students have a passport to Houston with free and discounted access to certain areas and on transit. Eveything you could want is there.
Campus Visit Notes for Rice University
Visit Description:
We arrived for an informatoin session barely on time after nearly missing the free shuttle service that goes around campus. You have to be careful to get on the right shuttle as we made an error on the way back to the parking lot. Parking in the free Greenbriar Parking lot is utterly convenient. There is a drop off that leaves you right across from the Admissions center. From there, the architecture really strikes you.
The powerpoint session helped but most certainly wasn't life changing, I didn't have too many questions afterwards though, so I suppose it covered great breadth.
The tour wasn't too long and covered much or Rice that the information session overlooked. The tour guide really seemed happy at Rice and made us all comfortable.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
Park at Greenbriar, but arrive early so as to not miss the shuttle!
