Visit Activities:
Classroom Visit:
Yes - Sat in on presentations during a Conservation Biology class.
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
5 - Excellent
Students here were very down-to-earth, welcoming, spirited, and cool. The other prospective freshmen were also very nice. I felt welcome and at home on Rice's campus.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
5 - Excellent
All the other admissions staff were very friendly... above the expected friendliness. Rice's admission office was one of the admissions offices that treated me the best.
Appearance of Campus:
5 - Excellent
My jaw dropped when the shuttle bus driver drove me through the campus entrance. The boulevard was lined with a hundred or so oak trees. The campus buildings and green spaces were also very beautiful.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
4 - Very Good
All the facilities were clean... the grounds could have been slightly better kept though.
Dormitories:
4 - Very Good
The dorm I stayed at in Hanszen College was definitely one of the more spacious dorms I've stayed in. Most of the residential colleges ("dorms") have been renovated.
Security/Safety:
5 - Excellent
Even though this campus was in the middle of Houston, I felt very safe. It is an isolated oasis in the middle of one of the nation's largest cities.
Overall Campus Impression:
5 - Excellent
I was very impressed with the campus. The campus was beautiful and the facilities were modern and nice. However, what really impressed me was the students. They were all friendly and welcoming.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
5 - Excellent
Can't ask for a better location... it is next to the world's largest medical center, a zoo, a big park, and Rice Village shopping area. It is about 5 miles from downtown Houston.
City/Town/Community:
5 - Excellent
Houston is the archetype of a cosmopolitan and modern city. It boasts great arts, great culture, great sports, and tons of internship opportunities... a lot of Fortune 500 businesses are located here.
Campus Visit Notes for Rice University
Visit Description:
Rice treated me very well, so they won my business. They paid for my airfare and welcomed me warmly when I reached campus.
Additionally, I was lost at the Rice Memorial Student Center, and I wanted to get back to the admissions office where all my luggage was. One of the admissions staff members walked me back to the office. All the other admissions staff were very friendly... above the expected friendliness during college admit days. Rice's admission office was definitely one of the admissions offices that treated me the best.
On top of that, all the students were friendly, spirited, and welcoming. They were very helpful in answering questions and made me feel right at home. All the prospective freshmen were nice as well.
