Hard to determine really. However, hs daughter took a (daytime) summer class at Rice; it was suggested she walk with others due to ongoing construction and difficulty monitoring access to campus. |

Rice University police seemed friendly and nonintrusive, but they were always on patrol and ready to help. |

Gosh, every few minutes it seemed a Rice Police or campus security vehicle pulled around the corner. Plus, they have poles with blue lights all over campus which you can go to and contact police. |

The campus "security" force is a police department that can arrive on site in 90 seconds. There is a very low crime rate, one of the lowest in private schools in Texas, or the nation. |

It's pretty much isolated from the city. I felt safe the entire time. Also, the surrounding area looked relatively well-off. |

It's typical. Campus police right there, nighttime escorts, bus system, etc. |

Pretty good for a school in the middle of a major metroplitan area. In fact, really good under those circumstances. |

Rice is in a great part of Houston and campus security appears to be tight. There are security posts all over the campus for emergencies. The surrounding neighborhoods seemed to be very safe. |
