Visit Activities:
Admissions Interview:
Yes
Information Session:
Yes - We only attended the second half, but the admissions rep, a recent grad, was very enthusiastic, informative and quirky. Talked about the essays and making yourself stand out through the essay.
Campus Tour:
Yes - Excellent. Tour guide was a rising senior drama major - very funny and enthusiastic about the school. Walked barefoot the entire time. Campus isn't too big, but lots of hills. Great exercise!
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
5 - Excellent
We only met the tour guides, but they all seemed friendly.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
5 - Excellent
Staff was great - dealt with them in the parking garage and admissions office. Everyone was friendly and helpful.
Appearance of Campus:
5 - Excellent
Red brick buildings for the most part surrounding green. Lots of hills as well. There's the statue of Jumbo the elephant, plus lots of other elephants in various places around the campus.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
5 - Excellent
Everything was clean and well cared for. Lots of athletic fields, and at least two gyms.
Dormitories:
Some freshman housing, and some mixed. Housing is totally random for freshmen. We didn't get to see inside any dorms, unfortunately.
Security/Safety:
5 - Excellent
Blue lights, Tufts police, plus campus is located in two towns - so you have those police forces as well. Plus, it seems like a nice area.
Overall Campus Impression:
5 - Excellent
We all liked the campus a lot. S especially took to it, though he's 12 and likely to change his mind.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
4 - Very Good
We didn't see very much - but basically residential with some restaurants across the street from campus.
City/Town/Community:
5 - Excellent
Close to the T which takes you right into Boston. Also, the tourguide said that it's a 10 minute walk (or a free shuttle ride) to a square where there is a bit more going on.
Campus Visit Notes for Tufts University
Visit Description:
We arrived late to the information session - got stuck at a broken traffic light in town. We caught the second half which still gave us a lot of information. The admissions rep was very funny which kept us all interested.
Tour guide also had a sense of humor which made the tour a lot of fun. He said the meal plan for freshmen is UNLIMITED and talked about the "freshman 50" rather than the "freshman 15" but he was in great shape, so probably an exaggeration. Also said food was ranked 9th in the country and is really good.
Another parent asked us where we were from, and when we told her where we live, a woman came running out of her office to meet us because she's from the same town - such a coincidence.
Overall, a good visit - and D is keeping the school on her list.
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
Stayed at the Hyatt Place in Medford - about a mile and a half away. The room was nice (large screen tv), the breakfast was awful (not included in the price of the room, so don't eat there).
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
Don't eat breakfast at the Hyatt Place in Medford. Supposedly the food on campus is excellent, but we were in a rush and couldn't sample it.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
There's a parking garage ($5). You need to buy a token there, and insert it to exit the garage when you're ready to leave. Also, there was some street parking available.
