Visit to University of Chicago in February 2007 by Miss61 (Student, HS Class of 2008)
Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - Q & A session that focused on the application process. Didn't get repetitive like some of the other info sessions I've been to. Campus Tour:
Yes - Guide could use some work on speaking skills (didn't speak loudly enough), but was obviously passionate about U Chicago. Had lots to say about classes, student life, etc.
University of Chicago Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 5 - Excellent -
Tour guide was very nice, and one student even offered directions when she saw that I was lost. All in all, students seemed friendly.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 4 - Very Good -
Didn't really get to meet any professors, but the info session leader was nice.
Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent -
Beautiful campus... Gothic architecture, apparently campus was designated a national botanical garden.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 5 - Excellent Dormitories: 3 - Good -
Didn't get to go inside any dorms.
Security/Safety: 4 - Very Good -
Campus itself seemed safe, surrounding area did not seem as safe. There is a van service though, which picks up kids 24-7.
Overall Campus Impression: 4 - Very Good
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 3 - Good -
Some safety issues. Seemed safe enough during the day, not sure about at night though. Just use common sense.
City/Town/Community: 5 - Excellent -
It's Chicago... enough said.
Campus Visit Notes for University of Chicago:
Visit Description:
Info session leader nicely summed up U Chicago students. When asked if U Chicago students have any fun, he said that students there define fun differently: to them, having fun is learning and participating in organized activities. I like this, but it might not be for everyone.
If you're not familiar with Midwestern winters, I would suggest visiting in the winter to see if you could survive Chicago's very cold winters.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
Try the Medici (on 57th Street, I believe). It's fairly cheap, and since it's a student hangout, you can get an idea of what the student body is like.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
Visit Seminary Co-Op Bookstore, U Chicago's second bookstore. Tons of character, low ceilings, etc... everything a book lover could ask for. Also, park in the hospital parking structure.
