Visit to University of Chicago in July 2007 by terrapin7 (Student, HS Class of 2008)
Visit Activities:
Campus Tour:
Yes - Did not take guided tour, but did "self tour" option. I'm not very good with maps, but after a while, i had it figured out. uchicago is on a square quad plan--easy to navigate. Classroom Visit:
Yes - I visited the classrooms in the history and language buildings; they were small (approx 15 students) and tidy. some were round tables; others were tables arranged in a square.
University of Chicago Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: -
I really can't judge since I didn't meet with any students. It was like a ghost town.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 4 - Very Good -
Staff seemed a little busy, like everyone in Chicago, but they nonetheless tried to make my day. They even told me where to take good facebook pictures!
Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent -
The campus is beautiful. Lots of green space, gothic architecture, spiffy new facilities, mature trees...everything I think of when I think "college." Very harry potter-ish.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 4 - Very Good -
Some of the buildings looked a little worse for wear...but there were some newer facilities and a bit of construction going on, so it looks like things are being updated.
Dormitories: 3 - Good -
They were an eyesore...after touring the campus (gothic architecture abound) i saw these hot pink and bright purple dormitories. it was like, "Wow, where the heck did these come from?" Very
Security/Safety: 4 - Very Good -
Saw lots of blue light phones, campus police service. The immediate area feels very safe and nice; but take a step off campus and it can get a little creepy.
Overall Campus Impression: 4 - Very Good -
The campus was everything the brochures said it would be; but i kind of expected to see more--something that would make me go, "WOW!" It was beautiful and clean...but didn't exceed my
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 4 - Very Good -
The area right around campus is great--fairly affluent, nice neighborhoods for abou a five-block radius.
City/Town/Community: 2 - Fair -
It looks pretty grungy and not very pleasant; i felt that, in order to have anything to do, a uchicago student would have to hop on the metra and head downtown. South side chicago doesn't feel s
Campus Visit Notes for University of Chicago:
Visit Description:
Here were a few things I liked:
1) Nice athletic facilities and field house. One of the athletic buildings looked like it was recently built--v. nice.
2) Lots of labs--a haven for the scientifically-inclined. There's a pretty sweet botany pond, as well.
3) Multicolored dorms...odd, but added character to campus in a Teletubbies sort of way.
4) Old buildings. Imagine taking history classes in a building that's probably 100 years old! Amazing!
