Visit to University of Chicago in April 2006 by drummerdude_07 (Student, HS Class of 2006)
Visit Activities:
Admissions Interview:
No - Will be doing an on-campus one shortly though. Information Session:
Yes - Actually informational (perhaps b/c it was my first visit). Stressed essay, nerdiness, and the Core. Campus Tour:
Yes - Good guide, told us many random facts. Great campus, not too big, and great architecture. Nice and quiet for a school in the big city.
University of Chicago Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 5 - Excellent -
Actually started the conversations with me. You would think the nerds at UChicago might be a little reserved and anti-social, but that is not the case at all.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 5 - Excellent -
Funny and attentive to everyone. When I walked in, they pointed us straight to the "lukewarm coffee and mediocre pastries" as they put it.
Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent -
Gothic buildings, other cool buildings. Green areas with cool architecture made a great feel altogether. Not what you expect of a city campus.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 5 - Excellent -
See above.
Dormitories: -
I'm not going to say, since we didn't go in one. They didn't look remarkable from the outside, but who knows.
Security/Safety: 5 - Excellent -
I really don't see what everyone complains about, and I am a country boy. Plenty of blue posts, free escourts and everything. I might even feel more safe than in my own house that's 12 miles from town.
Overall Campus Impression: 5 - Excellent -
Great people, great facilities.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 5 - Excellent -
Some great shops and restaurants. Just like you imagine there to be in the picturesque college neighborhood.
City/Town/Community: 5 - Excellent -
It's Chicago! But then, if you want to know about Hyde Park specifically, I couldn't tell you. Next to the Museum of Science and Industry though.
Campus Visit Notes for University of Chicago:
Visit Description:
They are not lying about the intellectual environment. Everyone seemed to love the school, and the Core. I asked one student how the workload was, he said "worth it". It's the most intense liberal arts education available in America, but they still get by and have fun. Though the UChicago idea of fun is not the same as other schools. Not being a drinker/partier, this is a school for me.
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
I live two hours away, so I drove. It'd prolly be cheaper to stay farther out from the city if you are going. Or do an overnight at the school and leave your parents home.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
Medici's was excellent. Eat in a dining hall, too. I ate in the one that had a reputation for being the worst one, and I thought the food was great.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
They have the Oriental Institute which I didn't have time to visit. Go down to the Seminary Coop , though, it is pretty cool. Walk around a little and just get a feel for the place.
