Visit to University of Chicago in May 2007 by davnasca (Student, HS Class of 2008)
Visit Activities:
Admissions Interview:
Yes - I thought it went pretty good (I hope!). My interview lasted about 40 minutes and we talked about tons of random stuff (from how we hate "e-books" to the Icelandic language). Information Session:
Yes - Haha, Ted O'Niell had an "emergency meeting" or something and couldn't give the "aims of a chicago education address" so, they had the physics chair give it and I'm Campus Tour:
Yes - OMG, I LOVED MY TOUR GUIDE! And the campus is SOOOO gorgeous! I ended up wandering the campus for like the whole next day, taking in its glorious beauty! Classroom Visit:
No - No time. Which SUCKS!
University of Chicago Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 5 - Excellent -
They were awesome! I sat w/ some people from Vincent House @ lunch and they were uber friendly and informative!
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 5 - Excellent -
I needed to print our boarding passes for our return flight after my interview and I asked the secretary where, and she was "here use my computer!" SOOO NICE!
Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent -
So green! And so many little places to get lost in! Random towers and balconies everywhere! Gargoyles looking like they're about to eat you! Ducks in Botany Pond! And... the weather cooperated!
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 4 - Very Good -
There was some renovation going on
Dormitories: -
Don't know about interior, but Snell-Hitchcock looked amazingly beautiful and Max P. was the Ugliest thing in a 34234 mile radius. I feel sorry for whoever the hell Max Pevlesky(sp?) was!
Security/Safety: 5 - Excellent -
Lots of blue light phones everywhere and city people don't scare me.
Overall Campus Impression: 5 - Excellent -
I LOVE THIS PLACE!
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 4 - Very Good -
Pretty good, not much in the way of shopping though. take the METRA rail into the city, fastest/easiest way. Also, GO TO THE MEDICI AND ORDER A MILKSHAKE! THIS IS IMPARITIVE!
City/Town/Community: 5 - Excellent -
Lots of gorgeous old homes. Very affluent area immediately around campus.
Campus Visit Notes for University of Chicago:
Visit Description:
Absolutely the greatest! I loved the campus and the "vibe" I got and felt right at home!
Here is a list of stuff that you absolutely have to do:
-Visit the Oriental Institute
-Visit the Robie House
-Visit the Seminary Co-op
-Wander around and look at fantastic buildings
-Talk to students
If you feel like "wow, I could defiantly do this for the next 4 years of my life" while doing any of this stuff, this is the place for you!
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
We stayed at the Ramada Lakeshore. Colloquially, this is known as the "Roach Motel". LOL! It wasn't too bad for a place to sleep though. Also, ask for a UofC discount. W/ the discount
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
I said it once and I'll say it again. MEDICI. MILKSHAKE. DO IT. Campus food was good to. Talk to the ad office and see if you can score a free meal.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
Look into the METRA, way quicker than buses, but you have to deal w/ schedules. I wouldn't bring a car unless I was a masochist.
