Visit to University of Chicago in June 2006 by hXcSTL (Student, HS Class of 2007)
Visit Activities:
University of Chicago Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 4 - Very Good Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 5 - Excellent Appearance of Campus: 4 - Very Good -
It's full of mostly gothic architecture with a few odd buildings like Max P. Random scaffolding is always around, emergency phone booths are everywhere.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 5 - Excellent -
Most of the buildings are great; there were only a few key areas like a couple of elevators that were kind of gross. The Shoreland kind of smells bad, but I think it's an exception.
Dormitories: 3 - Good Security/Safety: 4 - Very Good -
Directly on campus is very safe with one of the largest private police forces in the world, but venturing a couple of blocks away could be a very bad thing.
Overall Campus Impression: 4 - Very Good -
All of the students really love UChicago. There is always something going on from the beginning of crazy O-Week to Midnight Breakfast (the food wasn't that great, but it was free!) during finals
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 2 - Fair -
Hyde Park is a cute little neighborhood. There are festivals held there a few times in the year. The beach is only a 10 minute walk away along with the Museum of Science and Industry.
City/Town/Community: 3 - Good -
Nearly everyone loves Chicago. It's not a city that never sleeps like New York, but there's always something to do. But beware... the South side surrounding Hyde Park is a scary place!
Campus Visit Notes for University of Chicago:
Visit Description:
UChicago was great. I was there during finals week, so everyone was pretty crazy. The kids are resentful of the hard work, but most feel like better people after studying there.
