Hyde Park has an unsafe reputation and there are rough neighborhoods just a few blocks from campus. The university police presence is heavy, however. |

So many options: safe ride shuttle services, umbrella service (police will drive along side you as you walk home), etc., plus the largest private police force besides the Vatican. No complaints. |

Lots of security call stations around campus, plus large and active campus police force. Female tour guides said they felt safe on campus, but use big city smarts when out at night. |

I think safety is directly related to the surroundings of campus. I don't imagine there's much need for intra-campus security. Dorms are locked and whatever. |

From what the student panel told us, there are police officers on campus during the night to help escort students to their dorms, rehearsals, etc. |

Saw lots of blue light phones, campus police service. The immediate area feels very safe and nice; but take a step off campus and it can get a little creepy. |

Lots of blue light phones everywhere and city people don't scare me. |

I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I felt entirely safe. There are blue lights everywhere, but I didn't see anything or anyone that would make me nervous in the least. |

Campus itself seemed safe, surrounding area did not seem as safe. There is a van service though, which picks up kids 24-7. |

Directly on campus is very safe with one of the largest private police forces in the world, but venturing a couple of blocks away could be a very bad thing. |

Typical security system, police escort services, and all-night busses. Even though it's on the South side, it's extremely safe and well-equipped, just in case. |

I felt really safe on the campus. Every corner had a blue light on it and i.d was needed to enter the dorms at night. I went outside at midnight & I felt safe walking with a group of people. |

I never once felt unsafe there even walking around at night. There are security call boxes at every corner of every block all around campus and security is no more than seconds to a mintue away. |

I really don't see what everyone complains about, and I am a country boy. Plenty of blue posts, free escourts and everything. I might even feel more safe than in my own house that's 12 miles from town. |

The phone booths and campus police are a real presence, but nevertheless, Chicago is in a high crime neighborhood. You just have to use common sense |
