University of Chicago - Comments on Area Immediately Around Campus

April 19 2008	om2tbdf	Drove through some run-down neighborhoods on the way from Midway Airport (by that I mean billboards, tenement-like buildings, generally beat-up looking) but the campus itself is beautiful.

August 24 2007	chronicidal	The immediate neighborhood surrounding campus seems quite safe and detached from the rough downtown area. Midway Plaisance is right across the street. The beach is not too far.

June 10 2007	davnasca	Pretty good, not much in the way of shopping though. take the METRA rail into the city, fastest/easiest way. Also, GO TO THE MEDICI AND ORDER A MILKSHAKE! THIS IS IMPARITIVE!
April 14 2007	Mmomm	I understand that there are areas that aren't safe if you walk far enough off campus, but we didn't see any of that.
February 24 2007	Miss61	Some safety issues. Seemed safe enough during the day, not sure about at night though. Just use common sense.
January 27 2007	hXcSTL	Hyde Park is a cute little neighborhood. There are festivals held there a few times in the year. The beach is only a 10 minute walk away along with the Museum of Science and Industry.
January 05 2007	honied_dreams	Hyde Park is a little isolated from the city, so there's not as much to do, but there are always busses to the city center.
November 26 2006	TVwatcher	The campus is pretty much a city inside of Chicago. It's enclosed and makes you feel safe. The south side of the campus is where you probably don't want to be late at night though.
August 22 2006	poojad125	It depends on what side of the campus you walking to, if you go too south it tends to get a little dangerous but only at night, the rest of the area is scenic and safe. Lake Michigan is 15-20 minutes by walk and the city is a 10 minute bus ride away. Ther

August 04 2006	Humbert	Not much to do, just a few restaurants and bookstores. Most students do not wander around Hyde Park, due to crime and lack of night life.
