Visit to University of Pennsylvania in July 2007 by KLee0891 (Other, HS Class of 2009)
Visit Activities:
Classroom Visit: Yes - I had lectures at Leidy Labs (right by Quad). We had the only lecurture hall there which was pretty big and had a huge projector and it was pretty standard of what one would expect at college.
University of Pennsylvania Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - Staff was nice and what you would expect from a great school like Penn.
Appearance of Campus: 3 - Good 3 - Good - OK So Penn is in the city so right outside and surrounding the Quad are large streets full of people comeing and going (Hospital is right by it). Not the most beautiful campus unless you enjoy th city
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 1 - Poor 1 - Poor - The cleaning ladys there are supposed to clean everyday, but they cleaned once a week (maybe since it is summer) but there was a giant bug we killed and no one took it off the wall for over 2 weeks.
Dormitories: 2 - Fair 2 - Fair - They are not bad but not nice 4 dresser, a desk, a bed. There are 2 showers and 2 toilets for all the men on the floor (over 50 people) and same goes for women and the bathrooms are smelly and dirty.
Security/Safety: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - Security was good as Pennpolice were everywhere on bikes and blue phones were readily avalable, although youcould see some"questionalbe characters"roaming campus.Just be a little more carefu
Overall Campus Impression: 3 - Good 3 - Good - I think parts of Penn are nice (Locust Walk) but a majority of Penn is city with busy roads throughout campus. Its all preference. Plus there is one dining hall which kind of limits people.
Off-Campus:
Campus Visit Notes for University of Pennsylvania:
Visit Description: I did a summer program in biomedical research at Penn this past summer. As a much talked about college I think that academically Penn is amazing, but when it comes to the campus I think Penn is average if not below par. In the Quad there is alot of security which is good (guard at the gate) but the actual living quarters are kind of a let down. The bathrooms are NEVER cleaned the showers leak water all over the floor (there are only 2 showers for men and 2 for women same goes with toilets) making the bathroom smell and the mens room doesnt even have a window so when people dont flush it STINKS. Maybe it was because it was in the summer but the maids never came. I found the city in general to be boring after about a month there since on campus there is not much to do in the summer (stuff is closed and no clubs) so I saw some movies at the theater on campus and went to the Pottrock gym (THE GYM IS NICE!!!! AND NEW!!!). Alot of their non-Wharton buildings are kind of old and there is lot of noise as everyone is walking on the street (freshmen live in the Quad which is right next to the hospital). I think the funniest thing happened when I got an email warning about a group of kids ages 9-13 who we should beware of as they were known to mug and assult people. The thing I hated the most? The fact that major roads ran right through Penn. The part of campus I liked the best? The Locust Walk the strip of 300 yards of land where you can walk with trees over your head and where you cant see the main streets where there are benches for you to sit down.

Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments: Marathon Grille, Cosi, CEREALITY!!!
