Visit to University of Pennsylvania in April 2006 by honied_dreams (Student, HS Class of 2006)
Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - I was lucky enough to get a small session, and it was great. The admissions officer was so bubbly and friendly, and the info was good. Campus Tour:
Yes - Just the right length, but didn't get to see dorms/inside a lot of buildings.
University of Pennsylvania Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 4 - Very Good Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 5 - Excellent Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent -
Penn is gorgeous, especially in the spring, when everything is green and the sun is shining.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 5 - Excellent Security/Safety: 4 - Very Good Overall Campus Impression: 4 - Very Good
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 2 - Fair -
Penn isn't located right in the city, and although there are a few things to do around the campus, it could get boring.
City/Town/Community: 3 - Good -
Philadelphia is a cool city, but there is definitely less going on than in New York or Chicago. Transportation is also awful.
Campus Visit Notes for University of Pennsylvania:
Visit Description:
I stayed in a neighborhood far from campus, and it was difficult to get to. Philadelphia's transport system is, in my opinion, horrendous and confusing compared to other cities. The area was nice, but nothing special, and though many of the students seemed to love it, Penn seems a little like the party school of the Ivies. The campus is magnificent, which is good because that may be where you would spend most of your time.
