Visit to University of Virginia in February 2008 by 2-iron (Student, HS Class of 2009)
Visit Activities:
Information Session: Yes - Student-led session was one of the most informative. Students were more knowledgable about the nuts and bolts of a UVa education than most admissions officers would be.
Campus Tour: Yes - HUGE group got stuck with one tour guide...but he handled it AMAZINGLY well. Hippieish transfer from UArizona with INCREDIBLE enthusiasm for the school. Def. a highlight.
University of Virginia Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - Surprisingly diverse group of students all seemed happy. A few students seemed like they might even be having TOO good a time...probably the most party schoolish feel I've gotten from a school so
   Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 3 - Good 3 - Good - Didn't see any of the staff, really.
Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CAMPUS EVER. Very spacious, the central quad has such a colonial feel w/ great symmetry...the libraries, Greek columns...STUNNING.
   Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Well-kept.
Dormitories: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - Didn't see any, but there seems like a LOT of housing options.
Security/Safety: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Really safe town, equally safe campus w/ shuttles, bluelight (or whatever it's called), etc.
   Overall Campus Impression: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Excellent.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - UVa is so spacious, the university swallows up the town. The area around campus, therefore seems just like an extension of the campus.
City/Town/Community: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - Got the impression Charlottesville was a great, cosmopolitan town in the backwoods wasteland. Clean, plenty of restaurants and shopping. Get outside town and your securely in the Bible Belt.
Campus Visit Notes for University of Virginia:
Visit Description: What an incredible school it seems like! Still have my personal reservations about the frat boy atmosphere, but the grounds, size (12,000ish UG is perfect for me), and its academic reputation make up for it. Loved the quirks pointed out by the tour guide, like the DOBB (Disciples of Bob Barker) club that goes to the Price is Right.

Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.): Skyline drive is not too far away. Pretty in summer or fall, but incredibly boring in the dead of winter.
