Visit Activities:
Admissions Interview:
Yes - This was the best admissions interview I have ever experienced. The officer was cordial and made us all feel like we had a friend in this process.
Information Session:
Yes - A fifteen minute film that was actually informative. The power point presentation was concise and animated. There was plenty of opportunity for questions with authoritative answers provided.
Campus Tour:
Yes - This tour lasts over 100 minutes, so bring comfortable shoes. The campus is beautiful and exceptionally clean. There was a lot of road construction, yet the entire area was spotless.
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
5 - Excellent
There were plenty of well-mannered and pleasant purple-haired kids.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
5 - Excellent
The most courteous staff I have encountered on a campus visit.
Appearance of Campus:
5 - Excellent
Spotless.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
5 - Excellent
All of the buildings were very well maintained, regardless of age. Clearly, this school is not in a financial crisis.
Dormitories:
4 - Very Good
The only knock I have of this tour is that we were ushered through a show dorm room. I would have liked to have seen an actual dormitory hallway.....just to get the feel of life in Madison.
Security/Safety:
5 - Excellent
I come from South Florida, so even the "bad" side of town looked tame. I don't see any issues here.
Overall Campus Impression:
5 - Excellent
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
5 - Excellent
The university blends into the town of Madison very naturally. It seems like an ideal symbiotic relationship.
City/Town/Community:
5 - Excellent
Campus Visit Notes for University of Wisconsin-Madison
Visit Description:
As a parent of an oos high school student, I was put at ease about sending my son to UW-Madison. The people were respectful, kind and were sincerely happy to be there. Often times, a school will carry a strong reputation but will foster a sense of loathing and fatalism among its students. Not so at UW. Despite its demanding academic standards, everyone seems to have a positive outlook.
The school appears to have a healthy financial standing and is clearly at the forefront of research in this nation. I have visited several highly respected universities this summer and I can honestly say the UW stands head and shoulders above all of them.
