Visit to Vanderbilt University in March 2008 by palmettotree (Student, HS Class of 2007)
Visit Activities:
Admissions Interview: Yes - I interviewed with a friend of my dad's (both went to Vanderbilt in the 80s). He was great.
Campus Tour: Yes - I got a hilarious guy from Korea. He was great. It was just short enough to the point where I didn't get bored but long enough to learn a lot. He focused on the student body mostly, I liked that.
Classroom Visit: Yes - I went to a "History of Rock" class. The professor was amazing and a guest speaker came. It was pretty obvious that the class was mostly for upperclassmen majoring in music but I loved the s
Vanderbilt University Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Southern hospitality. What else can you expect? Even the people from other parts of the country (the majority of students now) fell into that groove of being outgoing and friendly towards us.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - I spoke with the professor on length after the class I visited. I tried that at another school, and, well, it didn't work.
Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - National Arboretum? It is in the middle of Nashville but I honestly felt for a bit that the campus was about half an hour out of the city there are so many trees and green fields.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - The buildings are great. I'll admit I don't really like the architecture on Main Campus, but I love the architecture on Peabody how it's much more like Jeffersonian and "UVAish&
   Dormitories: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Two words. The Commons.
Security/Safety: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - It's in one of the nicest parts of Nashville and the campus is closed off almost entirely. I prefer that over other city colleges in the country like the ones in New York that are just all over.
Overall Campus Impression: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Really can't complain. I already love this school to death and I haven't even started there.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - Very good.
City/Town/Community: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - It's Nashville. Music Row is within walking distance. A 5 minute car ride takes you to the Honky Tonks and the Cumberland River. It's amazing.
Campus Visit Notes for Vanderbilt University:
Visit Description: I can't really justify with words my enthusiasm to go here. To give you a picture of me: My dad went here, my mom went to an Ivy. I also got into a couple Ivies, Duke, UGA and Bama. I visited the Ivies and Duke and immediately ruled them out as I discovered I absolutely needed an SEC school with huge college football. I visited last fall for a football game and the tailgating is great. The Greek guys dress in khakis and ties and the girls wear sundresses. I live for that. The school is becoming more diverse but is retaining its old self.

Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments: Try to stay at the "Vanderbilt Marriott" it's right across the street. The only 5 Star 5 Diamond hotel in TN is called the "Hermitage" and that's not too far away either.

Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments: My dad took me to Flemming's which is right across the street but expensive. There are all sorts of places to eat.

Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.): Also right across the street is a huge park with a full-scale replica of the Parthenon in it...that's ridiculous.
