Visit to Vanderbilt University in April 2007 by fhimas88888888 (Student, HS Class of 2007)
Visit Activities:
Campus Tour: Yes - Our campus tour was informative and well organized.
Classroom Visit: Yes - Though I was there on one of the final days of classes, many students seemed uninterested and were not paying close attention.
Vanderbilt University Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - I asked a number of students just to talk about Vanderbilt and why they liked it. I had a conversation with them for almost 45 minutes -- it was amazing. Students were great.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Answered my questions and made me feel a bit better about the upcoming May 1 deadline.
Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Vanderbilt was probably the most beautiful university campus I saw with the possible exception of Berkeley and/or Yale. Vandy is like a well manicured park. It was so nice!!!
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Everything was clean, from the frats to the dorms to the classrooms.
Dormitories: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Freshman have the option of getting singles! Since Vandy claims all of its dorms are 'substance-free' (I laughed), getting a single seemd like a good way to find people less interested in p
   Security/Safety: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Blue boxes everywhere.
Overall Campus Impression: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - Vanderbilt has a very, very beautiful campus. Its academic buildings are built tall with high atriums and pathways suspended above the atrium that cross from one wing to another.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 2 - Fair 2 - Fair - Nashville is just all right.
Campus Visit Notes for Vanderbilt University:
Visit Description: I don't know if I can stress enough how BEAUTIFUL Vanderbilt's campus was.

I had a little informal 'interview' with one of the Blair School of Music Admissions Officers, and it turned out she had graduated from Vanderbilt. In our conversation I asked her to which schools she had applied, and she mentioned the Northwesterns, Tufts, and Brandeis' of the the world (she was from Boston), but she noted that she decided on Vanderbilt because the 'academics didn't seem as intense.' After that I felt like I knew Vanderbilt wasn't for me. Though there is not doubt that Vanderbilt offers an excellent education, Vanderbilt's atmosphere is different from the stresses of Harvard and surprisingly, the laid-back atmosphere of Stanford. Greek life dominates the social scene, and though there are certainly other things happening on campus, the Greeks reign.

Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments: Loews.
