Visit to Vassar College in October 2007 by want2bIvy (Student, HS Class of 2008)
Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - Friendly staff, informative, concise session. Provided great information on the school, plenty of numbers and statistics, but also a lot of original material. Campus Tour:
Yes - GORGEOUS campus. Great mix of new facilities and original architecture. Well-planned tour, ecstatic guide, beautiful landscaping, clean and maintained campus.
Vassar College Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 5 - Excellent -
Everyone seemed very happy to be there + excited to help. Random students offered mini-tours of dorms/campus sites.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 4 - Very Good -
Didn't meet too many staff members--open house run by students. However, those met seemed approachable and amiable.
Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent -
AMAZING campus...seems like a very luxurious estate.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 5 - Excellent -
Perfect upkeep. Not one unsightly facility or area...except, perhaps, student dorms...magnificent appeal. Even construction sites seemed tidy.
Dormitories: 2 - Fair -
Rooms small, bathroom facilities were rather cramped, showers only had curtains in visited facility. "Parlor area" was very appealing-complete with piano! Loved the "vegan ecofriendly&q
Security/Safety: 5 - Excellent -
Security guards everyone + in entrance area. Seems safe, serene...
Overall Campus Impression: 4 - Very Good -
Beautiful campus, excellent academics, wonderful students, great facilities...no downside witnessed during visit!
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 3 - Good -
Small college town, cafes, few shops, relatively rural. Area didn't seem upper-class, but comfortable. Didn't even see one neighborhood resident...Columbus day had everyone off and at home,
City/Town/Community: 3 - Good -
Small neighborhood. Arlington, closest built-up area, seems good for shopping. Quaint country roads, forests, etc. You have to accept the semi-isolation. NYC is so close!
Campus Visit Notes for Vassar College:
Visit Description:
VERY VERY impressed by Vassar. Never thought I would be interested in a rather isolated, upstate location, but campus seemed active, alive, inspiring even! Facilities were GORGEOUS, maybe the most beautiful I have seen yet. The academic program seems stimulating and enriching, the teachers seem involved. Students seem satisfied...one girl even let us into her dorm so that we could see life behind the tour...she was thrilled to help us out, just one example of general friendliness encountered. VISIT IN THE FALL--the foliage is gorgeous!
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
Didn't use any...though there were many hotels nearby.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
Take the parkway if you are coming from NYC, not the Taconic. Much nicer ride, much less hills and such. Though the Taconic is a shorter ride, by about 20 minutes, the parkway is an ideal trip.
