Campus Visit Notes for Virginia Tech

Visit Description:

I went to VT for the tour in the morning...I would vote for a warmer day, it was really cold. Tour guide was great, he was very school spirited (as are all Hokies, I guess) and knew a lot. He told some things that I normally don't hear on the tours.
Campus: I liked the campus a lot. Rock is nice. There is a huge drill field thing in the middle, with a path across the middle, and you can get from the residential side to the academic really fast. Guide said the longest walk between classes is ~7 minutes, but you've got 15 minutes to do it in. The campus looks huge just driving through, but the way it is laid out, it's quick to get back and forth between places. It was kind of a dreary day...windy, cold, darker..and it was still really attractive.
Food...I didn't eat on campus--but they are rated number 2 in the nation (right behind bowdoin), so I wasn't worried about it. When you put money on your card, you can put like...ten cash on it, but when you spend it, you get a 50% discount on everything, so it's like $20. I mean, they could just make everything half the price...but whatever.
People seem really friendly, a surprising amount knew the guide, when you think about how many people are there walking around.
Freshmen can have a car, permit is like $65 a year. Dorms have a sink in them, which seems nice. I don't think that there is wireless in the rooms, but they have supa-fast computers.
I went to the engineering info session. I wasn't as impressed by the girl giving the lecture, but it was informative. Cool thing I had no idea about; I'm from NC, so if I want to major in an engineering field (I'm not sure if it's just engineering), and the major isn't offered at an in-state school (state schools, like NCSU), then I can get in-state tuition at VT if I major in that. Like Ocean Engineering. If I want an aerospace degree, but NCSU offers it, I can double major in Ocean and Aero, because there is only like two extra classes needed to do that. And I would get in-state tuition.
Overall, I really liked VT. I was a little hesitant about it, for a few different reasons, but I liked the atmosphere, and oh-the resources and opportunities. I am seriously considering it now.

Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:

stayed at Comfort Suites in Salem, VA because my sister goes to school in salem. Nice place.

Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:

Campus food is apparently good, and the tour guide could give recommendations for other places.

Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):

Get a parking pass before you enter at the Visitor's center.
