Visit to Washington and Lee University in July 2006 by IDefineCool (Student, HS Class of 2006)
Visit Activities:
Information Session: Yes - The best information session of my college seach. The speaker was riveting and it wasn't the run of the mill session.
Campus Tour: Yes - The guide was very knowledgeble. Very approachable and friendly. Didn't bore with unneeded details. Felt like a tour, didn't feel like an advertisement.
Washington and Lee University Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Students would stop and chat, answer questions, and basically halt their current activitiy just to talk to me about their school.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - I actually had a question about the dorms for my tour guide after the tour was through. He then answered my question and led me on my own mini tour. He was extremely friendly and sincere.
Appearance of Campus: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - Lots of green grass, excellent architecture, great scenic areas.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 3 - Good 3 - Good - Some buildings had a little outdated interiors (their historic pieces of art), but many of these old interiors were being remodeled when I visited. Very clean and maintenced.
Dormitories: 2 - Fair 2 - Fair - No AC. Seemed a little smaller and older than most freshmen dorms I have seen. 80% of students join frats or sororites and they have enormous historic-looking frat houses. Although apparently,as the admissions officer said during the 1 hr session, he rent
Security/Safety: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - University prides themselves on safety and security. Students say they leave iPods, laptops, money, just laying out on tables, they leave for 5 hours and find it right where they left it. They have a very strict honor code that they follow rigorously.
Overall Campus Impression: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - Fell in love with it. Its so unique and inviting.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 3 - Good 3 - Good - Its Lexington, Virginia. Just a small country town. Roanoke is 30 min away and Charlottesville is close by also however. Tons of outdoor activities though. Kayaking, hiking, fishing, etc.
Campus Visit Notes for Washington and Lee University:
Visit Description: Washington&Lee was the first visit I made of my summer journey, and I immediately fell in love with it. Every other visit I made, I had to compare to W&L, and the other campuses simply didn't. Nowhere else would a complete stranger, not only wave at me, but stop and talk to me. It's a great community feeling.
