Visit to Washington University in St. Louis in September 2007 by PhogHawk (Student, HS Class of 2008)
Visit Activities:
Information Session: Yes - I attended both a general Info Session as well as an Engineering-specific session. Both were lovely.
Campus Tour: Yes - I attended an overall tour of the entire main campus that lasted about an hour.
Classroom Visit: Yes - I sat in on a General Chemistry Lecture (75+ students) as well as a Spanish 1 class (15 or less). The Lecture was bland, but I'm not a chem guy. The Spanish class was phenomenal.
Washington University in St. Louis Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - EVERYONE- Every single person that I met was extremely friendly. I could tell that everyone was brilliant, but they were not there to flaunt it. Even more so than that, they know how to relax.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - Everyone was great except for the food staff. The food was fine- but not the locals that were serving it. Other than them, the admissions reps I talked to were very enjoyable.
Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - To die for. The whole campus is designed in a "University Gothic" architectural style. The constant look is very college-eque and homey. The whole campus is just like the post cards.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - Everything looked fairly decent, though there's some big construction going on. I don't mind that, it's progressive.
Dormitories: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - The one I stayed in was awesome. Another one I went to a party in was the newest and was crazy-nice. Some other ones I visited were less than impressive, especially for a school known for good dorms.
Security/Safety: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - I never felt unsafe during my three-day stay. The campus is secluded from the ghetto parts of St. Louis.
Overall Campus Impression: 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent - Beautiful and Growing.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: - I didn't really get to see the area that much, but apparently there's an area called "The Loop" with lots of college-town type restaurants and shops.
City/Town/Community: 4 - Very Good 4 - Very Good - I have some family in St. Louis, and I've been very impressed in the past. There are some parts that I'd avoid, but nothing I would be too fearful to traverse.
Campus Visit Notes for Washington University in St. Louis:
Visit Description: I visited for WUSTL's Discovery Weekend, where several hundred prospective freshman stay overnight and visit lots of info sessions, classes, and social events. The whole thing was run extremely well, and everyone I talked to was super-friendly. It secured by decision to apply, and for many of my peers, an ED application.

Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments: Try to schedule an overnight visit in the dorms, they're quite nice and provide a place to talk to students and chillax.

Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments: Everywhere on campus was great. It's probably the best campus food I've ever witnessed. We're talking Italian, Thai, and everything else you'd expect.
