Visit Activities:
Campus Tour:
Yes - Our tour guide was nice, and seemed pretty engaging, but I couldn't really connect with her... she was really into sports, which I'm not, and seemed sort of rah-rah in general. Her descriptions of things seemed sort of surfacey.
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
3 - Good
People seemed nice, and polite, but not very interesting
Appearance of Campus:
3 - Good
Pretty, but small, and a little empty. It never felt like there were students anywhere
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
5 - Excellent
Nothing wrong here.
Dormitories:
4 - Very Good
They looked really pretty, and I thought the "Entry" system was great.
Security/Safety:
5 - Excellent
I felt safer in Williamstown than anywhere else in the Western Hemisphere.
Overall Campus Impression:
4 - Very Good
The physical campus was nice- I had other problems, but in terms of the physical layout of the campus, it was pretty good.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
3 - Good
It was a classic rural New England town- picturesque, upscale-ish, but very small. There was a nice coffee shop, and there was relative seemlessness between campus and town
City/Town/Community:
1 - Poor
Too small! It was okay for a visit of one day, but I would hang myself if I had to spend four years here. There are maybe three restaurants, and like two shops... it's nowheresville.
Campus Visit Notes for Williams College
Visit Description:
I stayed in the Williams Inn, which was right off campus. Coming into the visit, and even at the beginning, I was really into Williams... I liked what I had read, the intensity of the academics and the closeness of the students and professors, and ignored the parts that sounded unappealing, assuming they would matter- the athleticism, and the rural location. I talked to a senior, the sister of a friend from High school, and she was really happy there, and honestly loved it. But after the tour, I decided the place was not for me. Sports seem to be the entire life of the school, and I really hate sports. It seems like going here without an interest in sports would be like going to MIT without an interest in math or science. Life would be bearable, but just barely. I really couldn't get in to the whole gestalt.
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
The Williams Inn was nice, if slightly frumpy, and very close to campus.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
There's a place- I forget what it's called, but it's sort of the most stylish in town- right off campus that's pretty good. It's a little over priced, but quite nicely appointed and with solid food. Seasonal, and a little creative
