Visit to Yale University in January 2007 by sportsharks (Student, HS Class of 2008)
Visit Activities:
Campus Tour:
Yes - The campus tour was ok. It contained way too much information about the residential colleges and stupid historical facts than about the educaiton itself.
Yale University Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 4 - Very Good -
They seemed very friendly, which was surprising, as not too many people are happy when its 20 degrees.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 5 - Excellent -
Not only was everyone happy, but they were all seemingly proud to be a part of such a prestigous University.
Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent -
Beautiful gothic architecture mixed with colonial Geogian. Very historic feeling. Has some oddities like the hockey arena that is shaped like a Peter Pan hat, but overall is very nice.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 4 - Very Good -
With the exception of construction, everything was topnotch. But realize construction will never stop, as they are in the process of doing 70-100 million dollar renovations on the residential colleges
Dormitories: 5 - Excellent -
The dormitories are beautiful residential colleges. Think houses of Harry Potter. People are randomly assigned into the houses, and associate with the. All have master and deans of each.
Security/Safety: 4 - Very Good -
Blue light system is in use, though I noticed it was not as prevalent as in Princeton. Also lock their gates every night, denying access to the college.
Overall Campus Impression: 5 - Excellent -
Amazing. The prettiest buildings mixed with an awesome residential college system lead to a cool experience.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 3 - Good -
The campus is imbedded right inside New Haven, for better or worse. See below.
City/Town/Community: 2 - Fair -
New Haven is not really a nice area. On my way over to the sports facilities, I had to drive through it, and it looked kinda dodgy.
Campus Visit Notes for Yale University:
Visit Description:
Overall, I loved Yale. Despite the fact that I was nearly frozen by the end of my tour, I left with the warmest feeling about it. After going to Princeton in October, Princeton was my number one choice. However, Yale has taken the top spot after my visit. Despite a town that leaves much to be desired, Yale cannot be beaten in the fact that it seems like a better place to live. Whereas Princeton seemed very stuckup, the Yale tour left me feeling like I would have fun and enjoy going there. Really though, the residential colleges are amazing. They are, in fact, not colleges at all, but fancy way of saying "extreme-mega-living-facilities." They are awesome. People there live in their own suites with 2-6 people. I really cannot explain it fully, so search "residential colleges" on WikiPedia. Anyway, I recommend at least going for a visit, as its too good to miss.
