Visit Activities:
Information Session:
Yes - More laid back and conversational. The dean of admissions did the session, and he had some GREAT advice on applying, but I did not come away with a good idea of the actual education Yale has to offer.
Campus Tour:
Yes - Fantastic, but very humanities based. The guide was really nice and we even ran into a professor who talked about the Psychology dept. My only complaint was that it completely overlooked the sciences.
Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
5 - Excellent
Could not have been more impressed by the enthusiasm and energy of the students that were there. They were all very approachable and ready to tell me about their experience at Yale.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
5 - Excellent
Everywhere we went the staff was friendly and accommodating. When we asked if we could try out the food in a cafeteria they opened the doors, and didn't even make us pay for the food! It was deli
Appearance of Campus:
2 - Fair
The busy roads felt very divisive and I didn't like how dislocated the science buildings were. Plus the entire campus was under construction. It just wasn't very pleasant.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
5 - Excellent
The buildings themselves were absolutely amazing. The gothic architecture was stunning and it seemed like they would have been clean in absence of construction vehicles/trash.
Dormitories:
5 - Excellent
I don't think Yale's residential college system can be beaten anywhere else. Enough said.
Security/Safety:
4 - Very Good
My only complaint here is the complete integration with New Haven. It wasn't even so much a concern about a bad neighborhood, but rather all the city traffic running through campus
Overall Campus Impression:
4 - Very Good
All-in-all, I felt Yale's campus was nice in terms of each building, but I wasn't as satisfied with the overall layout. Too many through streets, and the science buildings were so far remove
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus:
4 - Very Good
After hearing so many negatives about New Haven, I was surprised to find a nice mix of city parks, restraunts, and venues surrounding campus. It could have been MUCH worse.
City/Town/Community:
4 - Very Good
Its urban, so New Haven seemed fairly standard in terms of a more urban setting for a college. It wasn't New York, but it was fine. My one small concern was number of homeless at the nearby park.
