Visit to Yale University in July 2007 by bmwdan13 (Student, HS Class of 2008)
Visit Activities:
Yale University Campus:
Friendliness/Courtesy of Students: 5 - Excellent -
Yalies are extremely friendly. Of the students and alumni that I met, not a single one was condescending or arrogant, to the contrary, they were very friendly and helpful.
Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff: 5 - Excellent -
The staff members that I met were very excited to be at Yale and they bent over backwards to answer questions and provide information to prospective students.
Appearance of Campus: 5 - Excellent -
Yale is a beautiful collection of Gothic architecture and wood paneling. The most amazing architechture of any campus I have seen.
Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness: 4 - Very Good -
Some cockroach problems and some dorm rooms had bad ceiling tiles (rot). Overall, however, it was very well maintianed.
Dormitories: 4 - Very Good -
Spacious, well-lit, and comfortable dorm rooms that actually had wood floors! Wow...
Security/Safety: 3 - Good -
New Haven is a scary place. Some people in town really hate Yalies, and there are homeless people everywhere, even on campus.
Overall Campus Impression: 5 - Excellent -
Yale is amazingly beautiful, with great dorms, facilities, and friendly people.
Off-Campus:
Area Immediately Around Campus: 2 - Fair -
The Green is loaded with homeless people, and there are panhandlers all along the street.
City/Town/Community: 2 - Fair -
New Haven is not the best place in the world for culture or meeting people off campus. Frequent sirens at night, and a triple homicide in the area while I was there.
Campus Visit Notes for Yale University:
Visit Description:
I got to know Yale quite well in the time I was there, and I really enjoyed the visit. It is a great campus, but located in a bad place. New Haven can be a rough area.
There seems to be a lot Yale has to offer- beautiful architechture, lots of green space, residential colleges, etc. but the city is the exact opposite.
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
I did not stay in any lodging besides the dorms.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
There are a number of great restaurants in the area near the athletic facilities- Au Bon Pain, etc.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
Very few attractions in New Haven. Parking is a nightmare.
