CMU's School of Design and its competition?

Maybe I should be posting this as a Carnegie Mellon thread, but I was wondering what "art people" know or have heard about CMU's School of Design. On their website Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) > School of Design > Carnegie Mellon University
they have some FAQs, among which is:

Q: Which schools do you consider your competition?
A: Competitive schools include: Washington University; Syracuse; Ohio State; University of Michigan; Rhode Island School of Design; Rochester Institute of Technology; and North Carolina State.

I have heard from several friends who went to grad school at CMU in the 80s that CMU was a cut-throat, weed-out school, but that if you survived, you got a great education and usually a great job after school. Maybe that data is too old, or maybe it only applies to computer science & engineering - I'm not sure...

My D is interested in Communication Design/Visual Communication/Graphic Design/Illustration (any of those will do!). For that major, can anyone offer thoughts on those schools above, especially CMU, Wash U and RISD?

Read over my review of CMU found at the top of their forums and in the "college visit" forum. Frankly, you should add University of Cincinnnati to your list. I think it may even be better than CMU because of their coop program and because they have more majors in their school of design.

Thanks, taxguy. I read your reviews of CMU and U of Cincinnati and they were very informative and extremely helpful.
