all I know is it is awfull hard to win.
last year, the best kid from the best school who my kid met during pre college gotten only lowest merit award.
It seems you could be coached to win more so than scholastic because there are some trend in the criteria but for most kids, it is a waste of rather high fee to enter.

I looked at some pictures from last year's awards and oh wow you are right about the level...but $35 entrance fee for a lottery of a few thousand kids didn't seem so steep to me. Just getting an honorable mention in December could be a nice boost to college admission.

my understanding is that, if you are looking into one of THOSE schools you got to have high awards.
though, the merit award kid is at yale if rumor serves right.

If you register early, you get a bit of a break...but I agree, the entry fee is steep, especially for kids entering multiple categories.

At the same time, I was a finalist last year and it was a FANTASTIC experience. By far the best part of my senior year. And especially for musicians/actors, putting the submission together is a nice way to prepare for upcoming college auditions.

I submitted my portfolio because I thought that by submitting a graphic design-concentrated portfolio, I might stand out a little more. It's always worth a try in my opinion, you never know when your work is going to fit the judges bill completely.
I also submitted a piece to scholastic, I think it's smart to just put yourself out there. And 40 dollars isn't too steep a price if you end up getting recognized in my opinion.

My daughter submitted. We didn't have to pay anything for the application, though. There's a waiver program.
