Johnson Scholarship Decisions!

My sister got great news today...she received her acceptance to W & L, and the Johnson Scholarship in the mail today!! She is still waiting to hear from a few places, but what a great option this is. And she really enjoyed her visit there much more than she thought she would. W & L is now much, much higher on her list of final possibilities. She has some tough decisions to make next month...

Same for my son. He isn't sure he will attend, but this award makes an already very attractive school even more so. He really liked WLU on his Johnson visit--mich more than he thought he would Wonderful news that he received the scholarship. We are very grateful.

Congratulations to your sister and son! My son also finalist but won't hear news either way until 3/23 as he's also a finalist in a regional scholarship. It doesn't make sense to me that they don't let him know the Johnson decision either way...but it is what it is. Keeping fingers crossed!

That would be her, Danigirl. I will pass on your response. That hair color is real...you can't lie at W&L! Congratulations to you, too!

My son received his acceptance today, but no scholarship. WLU was his first choice, but he will probably end up at one of his other schools that offered large scholarships. Congratulations to all the recipients!

Does anyone know of a good way of networking with the other finalists? I met several interesting people at the competition and I can't easily find them now. I wish I had a list with contact info or at least names to refresh my memory.

It appears that the greek system plays a large part in the social scene at W&L. And I understand that the university owns the frat and sorority properties. If a Johnson Scholarship recipient wanted to live in a frat or sorority house, could the room and board allowance from the scholarship be applied toward the frat house charge for room and board?

I'm not sure. I was wondering the same thing. Frat houses and off campus housing seem like slightly hazy issues, but W&L is trying to cover the estimated living cost. If you go beyond the minimal amount, it would be difficult for W&L to justify paying less than that amount. It seems to me that the scholarship is just an award to cover pretty much all of your basic expenses; I doubt it would ever drop significantly. It might not cover the entire extra cost of a frat or off campus house, but it would not leave much expense. That sort of tricky reassessment isn't really in the spirit of a merit scholarship.

Current Johnson

You basically receive the amount of money you were promised and you can use it however you want. The cost of Greek housing is the same as Gilliam so it shouldn't be much of an issue and many people save money when they go off campus. I had similar questions last year so feel free to ask me questions. I am not active here often but you can email me at jangha15@mail.wlu.edu for any questions regarding W&L or the Johnson Scholarship and I will try to reply in haste.
