How would you describe the least satisfied ppl at W&L?

I know this is not really a fair question because I'm asking for a broad generalization. Nonetheless, generally speaking, what are the characteristics of those students you have seen who are the least happy at W&L? Do they tend to be the Independents, minorities, introverts, socially challenged, or what? If you had to make a composite profile of the unhappy W&L student what would it look like?

it would probably be someone who was introverted and socially challenged and/or who dislikes the Greek/party scene at W&L. They would almost certainly be Independent, but it's important that they're probably Independent BECAUSE they're miserable and NOT the other way 'round. This is a VERY generalized profile, and I know lots of people who aren't Greek/don't drink/aren't into the party scene who are happy here. Usually the main problem that people have isn't that they don't drink, but that they don't like people who do.

If you have an open mind, you'll be fine here. People often seem to criticize W&L for being too Greek/Southern/Conservative, but those people are just as close minded as they accuse us of being. If you come here willing to take people as they are, you'll generally find that people here are willing to accept you. If you come in saying "I'm black/asian/nerdy/sober and these people are terrible and won't like me" ...then we probably won't.

I'm sorry if this is rambling...I'm in the middle of paper writing and I'm kind of saving all my coherency for that. I'm not trying to offend anybody. This is the way I see things as working here.

Ha, no apologies necessary. Thanks for the response. I'm not worried abut D fitting in at all. She's an independent thinker, but not the least bit challenged socially. W&L is very different from the other schools she applied to and we haven't visited yet, so I have a lot of questions. Most are related to social aspects - probably the same kinds of questions you hear all the time. Her mother has been expressing some reservations that I've been trying to squash until after we at least visit. in the meantime, I thought some dialogue here might be helpful.

All of us are already convinced the academics are top notch - not many concerns about that.

Yeah, people who can't hang academically generally don't last past winter term, so that's usually not an issue.

I'd be happy to answer any questions you have. I may be the only Greek-affiliated girl on here (but I don't know that), so I might be one of the best people to answer your questions. You can PM if you prefer.

I think the information from the link below is a bit dated, but would you mind taking a look at it and giving me your opinion on how much you think it accurately reflects the W&L experience?

Thanks again to those of you who sent me a PM. Does anyone else have opinions? I'd love to get Jeepmom's take on this.

I read part of that article a week or so ago. It was a longer than I expected, and I never got back to it. I think some people may try to overanalyze a school, including this one. People at W & L tend to be fairly happy, pretty much across the board.

Just going to point out that that article is quite dated as well, from the beginning of President Burish's short-lived tenure which was quite unpopular to say the least.
