I was trying to plan out what classes I would ideally take this fall, but was very confused by the numbers following the department code. For example, for Intro to Public Health it says 3283 after, so I was wondering if that meant anything, like it's not meant for freshmen or something. There are no pre-reqs listed, so I wasn't sure. If someone could please explain the numbering system to me that would be great. (sorry if this is a very silly request)

As a rule of thumb: the greater the leading digit of the course number, the higher level the class. However, as you have discovered, not all the higher number classes necessarily have prerequisites.

To the best of my knowledge, if there are no pre-reqs, then yes, you can take it.

Yes you can take it as a freshman, but you might not get in. The class is capped at 300, and there are already 34 people on the waitlist. As I understand, it's not one of those classes that a lot of people drop.

For reference, 308 people took it last fall - the cap was not raised from 300. That means those extra 8 were specifically added. I can't speak for the public health department, but chances are that means that they'll give preference to some people, but not all. I doubt freshmen are going to be given special privilege.

I took econ 401 my first semester, so yes you can take anything you want if you satisfy the prereqs and have room.
