My son graduates this year, too, and I'm going to have a hard time not being connected in some way to wash u. Out of the four universities my three children have been to, this is the one that will be the hardest to leave.

When my son graduated from Wash U in 2002 I'm not sure who felt worse, him or me. Talk about separation anxiety! But I'm happy to say that I have a sophomore there now and that has eased the pain. I still have 2 years before I feel it again.

So I'm not the only mom who will miss WashU too! I loved my yearly visits with my daughter around her birthday. We had so much fun with all there is to do within walking distance of the campus. Yes, it is very bittersweet when they graduate.

no, it has good academics and a poor social scene. In my opinion. Yours may be different. Which is why an abstract thing such as prestige shouldn't factor in someone's decision.

what?? washu is less prestigious than nw? washu has a lower acceptance rate, is smaller, and is ranked higher than nw.
How does size come into play in the prestige game?
Is Swarthmore less prestigious than Ohio State because it is smaller? Or would a small no-name college be more prestigious than someplace like USC because it's big? I dont see how size is an issue in prestige...?

I agree with those who will miss Wash U and St Louis. D graduated last year, has settled in San Francisco. I am TRULY sad that I will have no more reasons to visit "The Lou"!

so currently your children are around 160-180k in debt? As you may have perceived, my main predicament is the financial aspect. How did you guys sort this out?

They provided me with a large amount of financial aid, even though my family is by no means impoverished. I will only be paying ~13k/year, starting next year. If you need more money than they initially provide, you can contact Bill Witbrodt and he will work with you to make it less of a financial burden to attend WashU.

You definitely have a good shot at getting some more financial aid. Just call/email Bill and explain why you need the money, and he will most likely help you out. It's generally more effective if you haven't made your decision yet and are trying to choose between different colleges, but you should still be able to get some help.

Mom Of Alex, ThreeKids, MissMolly:

Add me to the list of WUSTL parents who will shortly be ex-parents. Our daughter graduates in a week, and (as her grand finale) is organizing a protest against WUSTL's decision to award Phyllis Schlafly an honorary doctorate. Ah, the enthusiasm of youth. And their non-arthritic joints... :-)
