I'm told that while WUStL has a good teacher:student ratio on paper, many of the classes are still huge. Is there any truth to this?

Basic Idea

Pre Medical Classes
Chemistry: two large classes averaging 200 each. Last year there were approx 450-500 students in two classes.
Biology: After first semester many drop out leaving the classes to less than 200 each.
Organic Chemistry: One class around 200-300. Many pre meds drop out

Language Classes
Anywhere from 15-30 depending on popularity of the language. I know Chinese and Spanish usually have 30 in the main class or less and in the many subsections its usually less than 15 to improve interactivity.

English Classes
Writing 1 for freshmans will have 15 for fewer students in each class.
Other english classes I have heard to have 15 or fewer but some popular ones can be large.

Basically, science classes are usually pretty big. The other departments have their own basic classes that many students HAVE TO take in order to fulfill requirements (e.g micro macro econ). But the majority are smaller classes. After the first year you should find yourself in much smaller classes. Some classes have 7 or less! First year it might seem bad becaue most freshmans are getting the basic requirements out of the way, but dont worry washu is excellent in terms of getting to know your professors and one on one help. It just all depends on whether YOU make the effort to get to know them and to get the help. In fact I might even venture to say taht their is a surplus of help. =D Anyways good luck.

I have had upperclass courses and the ratio be 15:1 in some courses and 30:1 in others. I am a computer science major who transferred to Mizzou. I would suspect, however that entry level classes are going to be a lower ratio.
