| I should note that my daughter is in a magnet program; thus, almost everything she takes is either honors or AP. She has a high school weighted GPA of 3.95 ( unweighted around 3.5) and SATs for 1810 ( M 640, V 570). She has a very strong art portfolio and is interested in art. However, I didn't think, based on Wash U acceptances that I have seen from our high school , that she has a chance. Thus, my question deals with transferring. | |

| Taxguy: My daughter is transferring to Wash U. as a sophomore (from Colgate). As a general premise, when a student wants to transfer as a sophomore, his or her high school record is still the most important element of the application, since at the time the transfer application is submitted, the student only has one semester's worth of college grades. (I also think it helps to be transferring from a well-respected school; probably college grades can be somewhat lower if a student is trying to transfer from Good School A to Good School B. That said, I don't think there's a prayer of tranferring without a very solid first college semester.) The high school record becomes far less important when sophomores try to transfer for junior year; there's a much more fully developed college record for transfer schools to look at.

| Why does D want to transfer to Wash U? What college is D going to now? D should not try to transfer after only completing 1 semester at current college. She should complete 2 semesters before applying. | |

| She is a rising senior in high school. However, based on the stats of kids that get accepted/ rejected from our high school, I didn't think she had the slightest chance. I have included the url for naviance software so you can see who got in and who was rejected from our high school by GPA and SATs. My daughter wasn't even close. | WashU admission decisions are weird, so nothing is 100% sure...if your daughter really have such a strong art portfolio, perhaps she could get into the art school and then double major in another school?
In my opinion (as a teen), I'd think transferring would really screw up a student's social life. Just my personal opinion. | |

| I transferred to wash u as a sophmore and i had a 3.95 gpa. My high school gpa was a 4.1 and i've taken 6 AP courses and a bunch of honors. I transferred b/c the college i went to early decision turned out not to be what i expected. | |
